Leccinum scabrum is more commonly known as the birch bolete. They are usually found growing near birch trees. Each year in the Fall, usually October, these fellas pop up within 5-10 feet around the base of my birch. I’ve even seen a few appear in the summer months after a good rain. These are edible. Picking them when they are younger and firmer is recommended as they get quite spongy (and sometimes full of maggots and/or slugs) the older they get.
